For Jess

Jesse Lee Jadrnicek always said the reason he was never cold was because he was born on a rainy day. That day being April 15, 1978, a day the world was introduced to a new specie of super hero. A tall, blue eyed, blonde super hero who would eventually gather enough side kicks to fill Candlestick Park. The super hero adorns many special qualities, qualities that help them to strive toward greatness, and Jess has many. The ways in which he affects the people around him is foremost among them. Be it his immediate family, the vast multitudes of extended family and friends or a stranger, Jess is to begin with, intoxicating.

Those of us who have known him for years share an understanding of the feeling one gets when Jess enters the scene. It is like someone has turned on a light in a dark room, you can see again, and you cannot help but be attracted to the light. For others, the lucky, those who’ve only just met Jess briefly, they are most certainly left with an impression. That is to say inevitably Jess, Jedna, leaves his mark on every person he meets and that is why he is loved by so many.

Legends are made not born and Jess is a prime example of that notion. He learned at a young age to live life to it’s utter most, never wasting a second. A philosophy imparted upon him by those around him, and an ideal he would revel in and impart upon others. A way of life he and his family and friends celebrated and continue to celebrate. The “capo di tutti capi”, the boss of bosses, Jess is and always will be the ring-leader of midnight adventures through Old Mill, late-night rendezvous, games of pool in the city, sunny afternoons at the beach, sunsets on Mt. Tam and barbecues at 362 Edgewood. All the experiences we’ve shared would not be the same without his utter consumption of life and the energy brought out in each of us by that thirst. Along this course we have also been the lucky recipients of more laughter than most people experience in a lifetime.

To say Jess had a good sense of humor is a vast understatement. Nicknames, not always flattering, dolled out by Jess have a way of never being forgotten. Like name tags sewn to your forehead. It would be difficult to find someone who knows him that hasn’t fallen pray to his wit or been the emphasis, possibly the source, of his humor. It is safe to say that initial responses to such material varied, but once labeled by Jess it was virtually impossible to shake them loose. These are not always terms of endearment but have become so, and those who bear these badges know who they are. Still, they will stay with us as testament and are to be worn with pride. Such material may have passed from one hand to the next but it is hard to replicate truly original stuff, as we all know.

All envied, studied, and admired Juice’s style, swagger and savageness. Often imitated never duplicated… and currently never one to disappoint his fans… you were lucky if you caught one scene of the epic “Juice.” This saga, his saga, will continue on forever because a super hero never dies, not in our hearts and not in our souls. He touched us all!

Love, peace and thanks,

The OMP
